Mummers Parade 2027 New Year's Day: Charter Bus + Hotel Guide

January 1 2027 Mummers Parade — Broad Street route, Fancy Brigade finale at Convention Center, charter bus pickup spots, hotel packages, group strategy from PA + NJ.

Mummers Parade 2027: Friday, January 1

The 127th Mummers Parade marches Broad Street on Friday, January 1, 2027. The parade is one of Philadelphia's signature traditions — string bands, fancies, comics, and the Fancy Brigades parading north on Broad Street through Center City, with the indoor Fancy Brigade finale at the Pennsylvania Convention Center. Roughly 10,000 performers, 250,000+ spectators on the route, full-day street closures from Washington Avenue to Spring Garden.

For groups coming in from the Philly suburbs, South Jersey, or out-of-region, Mummers requires careful logistics — Broad Street is closed the entire day, parking near the route is impossible, and post-parade Mummers parties at Two Street and the Convention Center push transportation into the night. This guide is the playbook.

The parade route in detail

Mummers steps off at Broad and Washington Avenue around 11 AM and marches north on Broad to City Hall, with judging stands at 15th and Broad and the official finish line just past City Hall around 5–6 PM (last brigades). For charter bus operations:

  • Closed: Broad Street from Washington Avenue (1500 South) to Spring Garden (1300 North) — most of the day. Includes cross streets within 1–2 blocks east/west.
  • Cross-street access: Walnut, Chestnut, Market, and South streets — closed at Broad during parade hours; open elsewhere.
  • Best spectator pockets: Avenue of the Arts (Broad between Pine and Walnut), Dilworth Park (City Hall west side), and 12th & 13th street block parties south of Walnut.
  • Indoor Fancy Brigade finale: Pennsylvania Convention Center, Hall A. Ticketed event, 7 PM. Charters drop on Race Street between 11th and 13th — Convention Center bus drop bay.

Where to actually drop a charter bus

Five viable charter bus drop zones on Mummers Day:

  1. 30th Street Station drop + walk: The cleanest play. Drop at 30th Street Station (West Side), riders take the SEPTA Market-Frankford line one stop to City Hall (5 min) or walk the 15 minutes across Schuylkill. Bus parks at 30th & Walnut garage.
  2. Walnut Street + Independence Mall area drop: Buses can drop at 6th & Walnut (Independence Hall side), riders walk 4 blocks to City Hall. Bus parks at 6th & Race garage.
  3. South Street drop: Drop at 8th & South for groups wanting to watch at Pine + Broad. Bus parks at 700 S Christopher Columbus.
  4. Convention Center drop (for Fancy Brigade ticketholders only): Race Street bus bay, 11th–13th. Driver waits in Convention Center bus lot OR returns to depot for evening pickup.
  5. Pennsport / Two Street post-parade drop: After-parade Mummers parties happen on Two Street (2nd Street) between Washington and Snyder. Bus drops at 2nd & Reed, parks at the South Philly garages.

What does NOT work: any drop on Broad Street, any drop within 2 blocks of Broad during parade hours, any drop at City Hall directly. SEPTA + PPD will turn you away.

Pickup playbook from the suburbs

Most Mummers charters originate in PA + NJ suburbs. Real numbers:

Bucks County (Doylestown, Newtown, Bensalem): Pickup 8:30 AM, drop Independence Mall by 10 AM. Most common: 28-passenger party bus or 35-passenger executive coach. Doylestown charter bus.

King of Prussia / Wayne / Conshohocken: Pickup 9 AM, drop 30th Street Station by 10 AM. King of Prussia charter bus, Wayne charter bus.

West Chester / Malvern: Pickup 8:30 AM, drop 30th Street by 10 AM via 322 or 202+76. West Chester charter bus.

Cherry Hill / Mt. Laurel: Pickup 9:30 AM, drop South Street by 10:15 AM via Ben Franklin Bridge. Cherry Hill charter bus. Note: Ben Franklin Bridge has scattered closures during the parade morning for Convention Center deliveries — Walt Whitman is the reliable cross.

Allentown / Bethlehem: Pickup 7:30 AM. Most common: 35-passenger entertainer coach. Allentown charter bus.

Hotel + bus package: the smart move

Mummers wraps at 5–6 PM. The Fancy Brigade indoor finale runs 7–10 PM. Then Two Street parties go until 2 AM. Driving home to KOP at 11 PM on January 1 with intermittent snow and 200,000 people leaving Center City is genuinely miserable. Two better plays:

Option A — One-night hotel + Saturday morning return. Book your group into a Center City hotel for the night of January 1. Bus drops 10 AM, returns 9 AM Saturday January 2 for the trip home. Hotels we route: Sonesta Rittenhouse Square, Marriott Old City, Hampton Inn Convention Center, Embassy Suites Center City.

Option B — Two-night NYE + Mummers package. Bus picks up December 31 evening, drops at Convention Center / Center City hotel for NYE celebration, Mummers all day January 1, return January 2 morning. This is 36+ hours of bus time on a single booking; daily rates apply but the per-hour is dramatically cheaper than three separate runs.

What to wear, what to bring, what the weather will be

Philadelphia January 1 averages 38°F high / 25°F low. Mummers is an outdoor 4–6 hour standing event. Realistic prep:

  • Insulated boots — Broad Street is salted asphalt; expect slush.
  • Hand warmers (HotHands brand work for 8 hours; pack 2 per person).
  • Hat + gloves + scarf — no compromise.
  • Thermos with coffee or hot cocoa — there's coffee on Walnut Street but the lines are 25 minutes deep.
  • Folding camp chairs if you have an Avenue of the Arts spot. Most people stand.
  • Cash for hot pretzels, street vendor food, parade-day "We Are All Mummers" pins.

The bus stays warm with you. Most groups treat the charter bus as a warming station — return to the bus to warm up between brigade waves. Drivers leave the heat on and the engine running in their staging lot.

Vehicle pairing for Mummers Day

  • 12–18 person family/friend group: 14-passenger Sprinter (warm, premium ride for cold day) or stretch limo.
  • 18–28 person group: 20- or 28-passenger party bus. Most popular Mummers configuration.
  • 28–40 person social club, fraternity, or NYE friend group: 35-passenger entertainer coach.
  • 40+ person multi-family or corporate group: 56-passenger motor coach. Maximum warm seating.

See party buses and charter buses for full lineup.

Two Street after-parties: the unofficial parade-after-the-parade

Once the official parade ends at City Hall around 5 PM, the Mummers themselves and a huge crowd of locals head south to 2nd Street (locally "Two Street") between Washington and Snyder in Pennsport / South Philly. This is the Mummers' historic neighborhood; the after-party stretches into the early morning. Comic and Wench brigades string-band their way down the street; bars are packed; outdoor block parties run until 2 AM. Charter bus logistics for the after-party:

  • Drop point: 2nd & Reed, 2nd & McKean, or 2nd & Mifflin. These are the standard charter bus drop intersections.
  • Bus staging: Driver parks at the South Philly lots near the Sports Complex (Lot N / Lot K — free on Mummers Day since no game) and returns at pre-agreed pickup time.
  • Return pickup: Most groups schedule pickup at midnight (mid-party) or 1:30 AM (end of party). The 1:30 AM pickup is the popular choice for Bucks / Chesco groups.
  • Driver-safety note: Two Street is closed to vehicular traffic during peak hours. The driver may need to reposition the bus 2–3 blocks from the original drop. Coordinate via group chat with the dispatcher.

This is where Mummers becomes a 16-hour bus charter — pickup at 9 AM for parade, drop at suburb at 3 AM. Two-day overnight booking is cheaper than the long single-day charter.

Center City restaurants for Mummers Day groups

Mummers Day group meal logistics matter — most restaurants are either closed (it's a holiday for most service-industry workers) or packed (it's a holiday and people want to eat together). What works:

  • Reading Terminal Market (12th + Filbert) — partial vendor lineup open Mummers Day; cheap fast group lunch. Walk distance from Convention Center / Center City drops.
  • Maggiano's Little Italy (Liberty Place, 12 + Chestnut) — big private room, group reservations for 25+, classic Italian-American family-style. Best Mummers Day group dinner option.
  • Buddakan (3rd + Chestnut, Old City) — pan-Asian, large group rooms, open New Year's Day with limited menu. Charter drop at 2nd & Walnut.
  • Federal Donuts (multiple Center City locations) — quick chicken-and-donuts group lunch. No reservations needed for parties under 12.
  • South Philly classics on Two Street (Tony Luke's, John's Roast Pork) — only do this if you're already on the after-party leg.

Reserve a week in advance regardless. Mummers Day Center City reservations book faster than New Year's Eve dinner.
