The Pennsylvania DCNR's Fall Foliage Report tracks color progression across the state's 12 regions from mid-September through early November. For 2026, long-range forecasts favor a well-defined peak in the Pocono Mountains and Delaware Water Gap around October 10 to 20, with lower elevations (Bucks County, Lehigh Valley, Hawk Mountain) peaking about 10 days later, October 20 through November 5.

What this means for group travel: you have three strong Saturdays — October 17, October 24, and October 31 — where you can pick your elevation and get a hit. Book two to three weekends' worth of options and let peak drive the final choice.

Four destinations, ranked by distance from Philly

1. Bucks County (75 miles round trip)

The easiest lift. New Hope, Peddler's Village in Lahaska, Washington Crossing State Park, and the Delaware Canal towpath are all within a 30-minute radius. Covered bridges include Van Sant, Sheard's Mill, and Frankenfield. Great for seniors and families with young kids — paved walking, restrooms, restaurants built for groups. Peaks late October.

2. Lehigh Valley + Hawk Mountain (110 miles round trip)

Hawk Mountain Sanctuary near Kempton is the hawk-migration lookout with the widest color panorama in eastern PA. Add a stop at Rodale Institute's organic farm or Renninger's Antique Market. Peak: late October. Motor coaches park in the main Sanctuary lot; there's an easy quarter-mile paved path to the South Lookout.

3. Pocono Mountains + Jim Thorpe (140 miles round trip)

Jim Thorpe is Pennsylvania's answer to a Swiss mountain town. The Lehigh Gorge Scenic Railway runs 70-minute round-trip color tours multiple times daily through October; group rates for 20+. Add a scenic drive on Route 903 through Big Boulder toward Blakeslee. Peak: mid-October.

4. Delaware Water Gap (135 miles round trip)

Route 209 through the Water Gap is one of the mid-Atlantic's best fall drives. Add Bushkill Falls (the "Niagara of Pennsylvania") for a two-hour walking loop with restrooms and a snack bar. Peak: mid-October at higher elevations.

Skyline Drive Virginia note: Skyline is a 5+ hour one-way haul from Philly and does not work as a day trip. It's a strong 2 or 3-day overnight motor coach itinerary — ask us for a custom quote if that's what you want.

What to pack for a group foliage tour

• Layers. Mid-October in the Poconos can range from 40°F morning to 70°F afternoon. Sweatshirt + light jacket + t-shirt underneath.
• Walking shoes. Not sandals, not dress shoes. Covered bridge stops and forest paths are uneven.
• Camera or phone with fresh battery. Cold weather hits phone batteries fast; bring a power bank.
• Binoculars (optional). At Hawk Mountain, birds of prey use the ridge for southbound migration in October; binoculars change the experience.
